The Michigan Engineering Coaching Program is integral to our mission of fostering lifelong learning and leadership within our community. Initiated in partnership with the ADVANCE Program in 2009, our coaching efforts have evolved into a multi-faceted initiative that supports faculty and staff at various career stages.
We showcase the enormous impact of coaching on organizational dynamics, leadership capabilities, and personal growth. Testimonials and feedback from participants underscore the life-changing value of coaching, emphasizing increased confidence, improved emotional intelligence, effective communication, and strategic clarity.
Coaching encourages participants to hone their leadership potential, build meaningful collaborations, and adopt adaptive strategies that align with institutional goals.
By actively promoting a thriving coaching culture, Michigan Engineering cultivates a dynamic environment where each member is equipped and motivated to contribute toward common goals. Our approach to coaching instills a lifelong learning mindset in our community, ensuring that Michigan Engineering stands at the forefront of academic excellence and social responsibility, as championed in Vision 2034
Key dimensions of our coaching program include:
Nurturing self-awareness and emotional intelligence to boost interpersonal dynamics.
Encouraging goal setting that aligns personal fulfillment with professional responsibilities.
Supporting transitions into new roles and responsibilities, ensuring readiness and adaptability.
Empowering individuals to hone their leadership skills, fostering an environment of mutual growth and understanding.
Participant Reflections
“The whole experience has been very fruitful. I am able to discern and observe habits of effective administrators and leaders, and incorporate them into my own responsibilities and actions. A personality and leadership profile was also conducted and it was really enlightening to formally understand my personality and leadership traits…”
“[Coach] provided a pragmatic approach to breaking down problems or sussing out what I hope to achieve. Moreover, their behavior is a role model for professionalism and interpersonal communication.”
“I believe I have been able to set and achieve several goals to the satisfaction of my unit leadership supported by the confidence and guidance I have continued to gain from coaching. I have been able to contribute to team building, faculty-staff partnerships, and overall unit outreach and I believe that this has been helping to increase the visibility and accessibility of our unit.”
“I am glad I proactively sought coaching when I stepped into my new role. I believe it is preparing me well for what's on hand and any opportunities that might lie ahead. More importantly, I am able to apply many lessons to my personal life beyond work and that has been a joy as well. Thanks!”
“I consciously reflect on my attributes and experiences that we discussed, and how certain tendencies can be either a strength or a weakness, and how the personal and the professional can be interconnected. This helps my mindset as I approach key decisions, as well as routine tasks.”
“What coaching has done for me is, it has helped me make sense of my desire to reach a new elevation in my leadership. What I mean by this is it gave me structure. It provided a way to break down what I do well, where I could improve, and identify ways I could practice the things we discussed with people and in spaces I have access to in my role. It also helped me identify other spaces I should consider gaining access to which is important because for me this meant pushing myself beyond my comfort zone. It was great to have a partner to help me design a leadership development plan. Leadership can feel lonely, as there is a reason for the old adage, it is lonely at the top. But coaching provides challenging support that eliminates the feeling of isolation.”
“I think my unit is benefiting by having my contributions be more focused and efficient (and sustainable...), as well as from the general impact on my professional life”
